People with a learning disability have worse health than other people, and die sooner than they should. But you can get healthy and live longer by changing some things in your life.

To be healthy you need to…

Eat well
It is better for your health to eat vegetables and fruit, and not very good to eat sugary snacks.
Eating well can help you feel better and not get diseases like diabetes.
Do exercise
This could mean going for a walk, swimming, or playing sport.
It is important to be active to stay healthy.
Go for your annual health check
Make sure that your doctor knows you have a learning disability, and ask them to give you a health check once a year.
This means you will find out if you have something wrong with your body – and you will be able to get treatment.

Training for GPs

Employment and Wellbeing

OxForward is an Oxford based wellbeing and employment support service that can help you to join sports teams, improve your wellbeing, become a volunteer and find a paid job.

If you don’t live in Oxfordshire, your local Job Centre Plus should be able to direct you to a similar service.
