Recently, MLMC trustee Paul Scarrott went into hospital to have his gall bladder removed. Paul was very nervous before going into hospital, but he was very pleased with the service he got.
Often we hear stories about how visits to hospitals did not go very well for people with learning disabilities. So what was different about Paul’s visit? What did the hospital get right?
We’ve listened to Paul’s story and identified 5 things that went well.
- The Learning Disability Liaison Nurse, Stephanie Ross, worked with Paul and hospital staff to make sure his needs were met and everyone understood what was happening.
- When Paul asked questions, hospital staff explained to him what they were doing and why.
- Staff treated him with friendliness and a sense of humour.
- The hospital used Paul’s Hospital Passport. Thanks to Stephanie, the team working with Paul saw his Hospital Passport before he went into hospital, so they already knew what his needs were and could plan reasonable adjustments.
- Nurses offered Paul reassurance when he became scared.
