Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training

Tier Two one day face to face mandatory training

Who is the training for?

The tragic and avoidable death of Oliver McGowan led to the implementation of mandatory training for all health and social care workers on learning disabilities and autism, as stipulated in the Health and Care Act 2022.

The Oliver McGown Mandatory Training is the preferred and recommended government training and all Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered services must ensure their employees receive appropriate training in learning disability and autism.

The goal of the training is to equip health and social care workers with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide appropriate care and reasonable adjustments for people with learning disabilities and autism, thereby reducing health inequalities.

FAQs

Oliver McGowan was an 18-year-old, who was autistic and had a learning disability. Oliver died after being treated for a seizure, despite medical staff repeatedly being told by his parents that he should not be given the medication olanzapine. It was found that his death was avoidable, and that staff had not understood how his learning disability and autism had affected the way he presented.

The Oliver McGown Mandatory Training is the preferred and recommended government training and all Care Quality Commissioned (CQC) registered services must ensure their employees receive the appropriate training in learning disability and autism.

All health and social care staff, even those who do not work directly with people with a learning disability or autism need to take the training.

The Oliver McGowan training was made mandatory for all health and social care staff as stipulated in the Health and Care Act 2022.

The training covers understanding learning disabilities and autism, effective communication strategies, promoting independence, person-centred care, legislation and making reasonable adjustments.

Tier 1 of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is for people who require general awareness of the support autistic people or people with a learning disability may need. You may work in health and social care, but not work directly with people who have a learning disability or autism.

Tier 2 of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training provides more detailed learning for those who may need to provide care and support for autistic people or people with a learning disability. You may work in health and social care and work directly with people with a learning disability or autism.
